story:
So what type of generator is right for your home?
Many experts suggest the newer standby generators, which are installed by an electrician outside the home and kick in automatically in the event of an outage. And because they run off the home's existing fuel supply, homeowners don't need to worry about refueling the generator if an outage lasts longer than expected. Portable generators, however, need to be physically turned on by the homeowner and require gasoline be added periodically to run.
Fire officials warn folks to keep portable generators outside the home, 6-10 feet away from the structure, and suggest pointing the exhaust away from the home as well. And they say carbon monoxide detectors should be installed in all homes, just in case.
