Working Nine to Five... To Nine Again
story:
Eight-hour workdays are a thing of the past. Advances in technology are creating constant interruptions and have more and more Americans wired to the office 24 hours a day. T.K. Anderson has more on this phenomenon from University of Iowa professor, historian, and lifestyle expert, Dr. Benjamin Hunnicutt.
Lifestyles, I'm T.K. Anderson. Remember just working nine to five? Nowadays, advances in technology have more and more Americans living in a 24 hour, work-centered society. Dr. Benjamin Hunnicutt is a lifestyle expert from the University of Iowa.
(Hunnicutt) Because work spreads over and more of our lives, we have less time to do those things that we need to do. And so, that 24-hour society I think is increasingly stressful.
Are there any solutions for managing each day?
(Hunnicutt) The research that I've been using in my classes by Taco Bell shows that our meal times are changing, that like half of us are eating later and later because we're busy. In the case of Taco Bell - offering a new promotion they call "The Fourth Meal," which is for young folks - 18 to 29 year old males, almost half of whom are eating their dinners after seven o'clock - so this fourth meal thing is designed to meet that need.
