SunTrust Study Finds Growing Business Owners' Most Critical Issue is Leveraging Themselves

According to a recently published proprietary research report from SunTrust Banks Inc. (NYSE:STI) for its business banking clients, entitled "Leverage Your Time. Three Steps to Finding the Free Time to Reduce Stress, Achieve Balance, and Succeed On Your Terms," 40 percent of business owners surveyed indicated that their most critical business-related issue is finding ways to leverage themselves to get more free time, reduce stress, or make more money. Coming in at a close 39 percent was funding their businesses' growth.
"A business owner's time is the most scarce, valuable, and unique resource in a business," said Gene Kirby, SunTrust corporate executive vice president and head of its Retail Banking line of business. "And most business owners have a hard time creating leverage and free time because of their mindset and habits, do-it-yourself management style, and efforts at risk mitigation and control."
SunTrust's best practices research suggests there are three keys to reaching the point when a business is truly working for the owner instead of the owner spending the majority of his or her time working for their business. These three levers give owners the ability to delegate, eliminate, outsource, or automate a high percentage of the day-to-day duties and roles so they can focus valuable time on performing activities that create the most future value.
The SunTrust study also offers the top ways business owners are having success creating leverage, and five places to get the highest return on owner time versus where owners are actually spending their time today.
The supporting research for this SunTrust study was conducted in conjunction with SunTrust's "Committed to Growth Seminar Series." The Series is delivered in partnership with Inc. magazine, and helps business owners focus on the best strategies and techniques to grow their businesses. Since January 2005, more than 2,500 business owners throughout the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic have participated in SunTrust's Committed to Growth Seminar Series.
