FirstEnergy (NYSE:FE) employees in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey completed their most successful companywide Harvest for Hunger campaign ever, with nearly $284,000 in cash and food donations equaling more than 2.2 million meals served. Since 2001, FirstEnergy employees have contributed more than $1.2 million in cash and made food donations to Harvest for Hunger that equal more than 8.8 million meals served. National food bank statistics indicate that for every $1 donated, seven meals can be served, while each pound of donated food represents slightly more than one meal served.
"Our employees once again showed their tremendous generosity and compassion when it comes to supporting Harvest for Hunger," said Anthony J. Alexander, president and chief executive officer of FirstEnergy. "Encouraged by a friendly competition held among our different business groups, our employees did a great job to help those in our communities who need it the most."
As part of its month-long campaign, FirstEnergy employees held a variety of Harvest for Hunger fund-raising activities, including separate "FirstEnergy Idol" talent competitions for employees in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey; food sales; and games of skill. In addition, The FirstEnergy Foundation donated $1,000, $500, and $300 to each of the local food banks of the top three winners in the inter-company competition.
In 2007, FirstEnergy's General Office, which includes many of the departments located at its headquarters building in downtown Akron, was the overall winner, raising the equivalent of 377 meals per employee. The Fossil Generation Group, which includes the company's non-nuclear generating facilities, came in second place, raising the equivalent of 143 meals per employee. The Energy Delivery Group, which includes the company's seven electric utility operating companies - Ohio Edison, The Illuminating Company, Toledo Edison, Penn Power, Metropolitan Edison, Pennsylvania Electric Company, and Jersey Central Power & Light - came in third with 128 meals per employee.
