West Coast Runs Laps Around the Rest of U.S. in Top 10
Do West Coast dwellers have the most spring in their steps? Which city boasts low body mass index (BMI) scores? According to Tahitian Noni International Hiro's "Most Energetic Cities" survey released today, the West Coast runs miles around the East Coast. And not only that, they looked great doing it, with one of the survey's lowest BMI scores. The survey found that the most energetic city in America is San Francisco and the corresponding Bay Area, leading other West Coast cities San Diego (2), Sacramento (4), Seattle (7) and Portland (8) in the top 10.
Hiro(TM), a new functional healthy beverage line from Tahitian Noni International, partnered with Sperling's BestPlaces on the survey to measure health, wellness and an overall energetic lifestyle of U.S. cities. The survey found Boston (3) was the only East Coast city in the top 10 followed by New York (21) and lastly, Memphis (50).
The San Francisco/Bay Area is the No. 1 market for people with an active lifestyle in the United States. From daily bike rides across the Golden Gate Bridge to long walks along Fisherman's Wharf, the Bay Area boasts the highest percentage of workers who walk, use their bike or otherwise get the most exercise each day, according to the survey.
The San Francisco/Bay Area also ranks highest in the "Adventure Index," which considers the availability of resources for surfing, windsurfing, rock climbing, biking, running, skiing, marathons and triathlons.
Following San Francisco on the list of top 10 most energetic cities are San Diego; Boston; Sacramento; Denver; Honolulu; Seattle; Portland, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. The complete list of "Most Energetic Cities" is available at www.tni.com under the HIRO section.
The survey also looked at an overall quality of health, which included data on Body Mass Index (BMI) and emotional well-being. Washington, D.C. ranked highest in this measure; Austin and Honolulu were right behind. San Francisco ranked eighth. Cincinnati rounded out the top 50.
"Research has shown that an energetic lifestyle is the key to longevity and overall good health," said Kelly Olsen, President of Tahitian Noni International. Hiro's "Most Energetic Cities" survey was conducted by Bert Sperling, a researcher who specializes in collecting and analyzing data for the nationally known "Best Places" surveys.
"Hiro's look at the most energetic cities in America underscores how much we've adopted a healthier, more active lifestyle, with 40 percent of the cities on the list achieving a score of 60 or more on measures of an active lifestyle and overall quality of health," said Sperling. "Clearly, solutions to maintain this lifestyle will be necessary to support our bodies' functional needs as they adapt to continued exercise."
About the Survey
To find America's Most Energetic Cities, the researchers at Sperling's BestPlaces searched for the places where people are living an active lifestyle to keep themselves well and fit. To do that, Sperling wanted to see where people were spending healthy energy like walking or biking to work, exercising and feeling good. First, Sperling started with the 50 largest metropolitan areas in the United States. These places contain over half of the nation's population. Next, Sperling looked at government statistics on how people commute, and how much time they spent each week engaged in moderate and vigorous exercise. Sperling also analyzed results from the world's largest health questionnaire to find how people were feeling, in regards to their general health and also their physical and emotional wellbeing. Sperling looked at the recreational resources available to the residents of each metro, such as the natural resources like oceans, mountains, or climate, and the number of fitness centers and outdoor recreation stores. Finally, Sperling considered the area's partiality towards healthy living, by looking at the number of farmers' markets, food co-ops and manufacturers of organic products.
