The recent "Getting Paid In America" survey, held during National Payroll Week, suggests workers may be willing to go "green" with their paychecks. Sixty-two percent of survey respondents would rather view their paystub online, as opposed to receiving a printed record of their paycheck.

With the high cost of oil and the threat of global warming, Americans seem more likely to embrace paper-reducing options. This is especially true when those options promise greater convenience.

"The American workforce continues to embrace new delivery vehicles for payroll and HR information," said Mike Martone, chief operating officer, ADP, Inc. "In this year's NPW survey, many employees indicated that they either appreciate receiving or would like to receive their pay statements online. Our clients, whether large or small businesses, find that by offering Web-based self-service technology, they not only increase employee satisfaction, but reduce their operating costs."

The environmentally friendly paycheck process known as "paperless payroll" allows companies to virtually eliminate paper printing. Employees receive their pay via direct deposit, and get improved access to their paycheck information through secure, online web portals. The process saves employers money, as well.

"The convenience, cost savings and environmentally friendly nature of paperless payroll make it a winning solution for employees and employers alike," said Dan Maddux, executive director of the American Payroll Association.

The "Getting Paid In America" survey asked, "How would you feel if your company no longer gave you a paper pay statement but instead provided a breakdown of your paycheck through an online portal?" Sixty-two percent responded either "would like it" or "my company already does it and I like it." An additional 26 percent were open to the change, responding that it "wouldn't matter." Only 11 percent said they would not like such a program.
