Genders universally rank dishonesty and dirtiness top turn-offs; online profile may get the date, in person appearance still seals the deal

Mate1.com, the 15 million member intimate dating site, polled its many users and asked them to reveal their top dating ‘turn-offs’ and ‘turn-ons’ when evaluating a potential mate. More than 3 million members of all ages responded, with results analyzed this week by Mate1, a consistent Top Five Nielsen online dating destination in the US.

More than 40% of women over men gave a thumbs up to a good sense of humor, while men awarded ‘dressing sexy” a 3-1 higher rating than women. In addition, women went 5-1 in favor of ‘romance’, with more men claiming an interest in intelligence than their female counterparts.

“It’s not surprising that the sexes continue to disagree, but it is interesting to see what they disagree on,” Liz Wasserman, co-founder of Mate1 said. “With more US singles than ever before, online dating continues its rise as the number one way to fully explore what you want and don’t want in a mate before the date begins,” added Wasserman.

Users marked ‘poor hygiene’ as the number one dating turn-off, with women seeing it as a ‘no date’ fault 20% more often than their male counterparts. Next in line came ‘dishonesty’, which women and men both listed as second in terms of a ‘no date’ situation, approximately 9% of women listing it more frequently than men.

“Daters know what they want, so Mate1 offers many ways to help people find their type. We help eliminate some of the guesswork before the meeting, but things like hygiene often can’t be captured in words,” said Wasserman.
