Notes of Interest:

Facebook (#25) makes its first-ever appearance on the Lycos 50, generating more searches this week than popular web search mainstays Dragonball (#27), RuneScape (#31) and Wikipedia (#34). Although MySpace (#19) still ranks higher in search activity, Facebook's open source policy regarding applications, combined with other unique functionality, has allowed it to soar in popularity. The finalists for the 2007 Weblog Awards have been announced, featuring a category for celebrity bloggers. Of the 10 finalists in the celebrity blogging category, five register high search activity this week.

The Top 5 Most-Searched Celebrity Bloggers:
  1) Kanye West
  2) Jenna Fischer
  3) Donald Trump
  4) John Mayer
  5) Mark Cuban

Kanye West's blog (which is 310% more popular than Fischer's) is made up mostly of videos and pictures, while Jenna Fischer (Pam from "The Office") keeps her blog on MySpace in order to connect with fans and discuss what's happening in her real life and behind the scenes of the show.

Interestingly, Curt Schilling's Blog, 38 Pitches, was also named as a Weblog Award finalist, but barely registers a blip on the search radar, despite Schilling's recent filing for free agency and subsequent resigning with the 2007 World Series Champion Boston Red Sox. Donald Trump's blog of business advice registers some search activity with web users, while his rival Rosie O'Donnell (whose blog is mostly written in haiku style) fails to generate much search interest this week. John Mayer and Mark Cuban offer more personal information in their blogs; Cuban discusses "Dancing with the Stars" and Mayer casually writes about his life, music, and other things of interest to him.

Search Gainers:

"American Gangster" gains 162% in search activity after topping box offices this past weekend, taking in $43.6 million. The Denzel Washington flick beat out Jerry Seinfeld's "Bee Movie," which ironically increases much more this week, up 700% in search popularity with web users. The death of Robert Goulet drives search interest in the singer/actor up 800%. Goulet died at the age of 73 in Los Angeles last week awaiting a lung transplant.
